World’s Largest Wind Farm in West Texas
October 26, 2009 - Texas is an optimum setting for wind power generation, given the inexpensive rural land and the steady winds across the Texas plains. The Roscoe Wind Complex recently opened for business in West Texas.
250,000 Texas Homes Powered By Wind Plant
The Roscoe farm is a 780 megawatt facility that sits on more than 100,000 acres. This coverage makes it the largest wind power plant in the world. The wind farm project will not only produce renewable energy for decades to come, but its construction also provided hundreds of jobs for Abilene contractors.
When operating at capacity with its 627 turbines, the Roscoe Wind Complex produces energy enough to power 250,000 Texas homes. Though the project went fairly smoothly, the most difficult hurdle the Roscoe Wind Complex had to overcome during its 3 years of construction was the sorting-out of the transmission of the power generated. Power lines were built to accommodate the Roscoe facility, which benefited Abilene electricians seeking work during economically lean times.
