Houston Contractors Can Capitalize on Disaster Relief Efforts

October 17, 2009 – In the wake of hurricanes Ike and Dolly, the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) has $620 million in its coffer to help rebuild damaged or destroyed residences. Houston contractors should be aware that it was just announced that the TDHCA will be spending $277,676 on repairs to Houston’s Tidwell Estates Apartments.  This low income rental development requires major roof reconstruction as a result of the storms.

It is the mission of the TDHCA to not only bring stability and comfort to those affected by Ike and Dolly, but to also aid the ailing construction economy.  All construction companies holding a Texas contractors license in the Houston area should pursue these community rebuilding contracts, as they offer steady income as well as peace of mind. To date, Texas has received close to $1.3 billion in federal dollars to aid in the state’s disaster recovery efforts.

Now, it looks like UH is moving towards a more inclusive renovation plan, that could possibly include the construction of a new football stadium.  Area contractors, including Houston electrical contractors, are excited about the prospect of the jobs the spending could generate.

Presently, the University is requesting submissions from general contractors on six possible construction plans which UH officials are mulling over.  One of the proposals involves both the basketball and football facilities being renovated, three proposals involve constructing a brand new football stadium, and two plans involve making modifications to the existing football stadium.  Needless to say, these projects could mean hundreds of construction jobs for everyone from Pasadena contractors to Houston HVAC contractors.

Houston Gets Funds for Hempstead Corridor Construction

November 20, 2009 – The IH 610/US 290 Interchange reconstruction project, which will involve widening the US 290 and the IH 610 freeways, was recently approved for $315 million by the Texas Transportation Commission. The funds are being drawn from the $5 billion of the Proposition 12 funds which have been allocated to infrastructure projects. The advancement of this large public works project is welcome news for Houston contractors and Galveston contractors.

Part of the arrangement with the Texas Transportation Commission involves construction breaking ground by May of 2011. Given these lean times, for builders like Spring Valley construction contractors, the project cannot start soon enough.

Home Sales Strong for Houston Area

November 28, 2009 – The Houston, Texas area saw an encouraging recovery of home sales in the months of October and November, with the city of Conroe leading the way with a 66 percent increase in October versus the same month in 2008. As with other regions of the country which have seen strong sales of late, Montgomery County buyers are taking advantage of government tax incentives. As the real estate market recovers, eventually will the construction industry, which is great news for Conroe contractors.

It is important to note that the majority of sales being experienced by the Houston area are in the previously-owned home market. New construction permits for 2009 are about half of what they were in 2008 for Montgomery County. But, when the surplus of available homes runs low, new construction will begin again, and that is welcome news for Conroe electricians and Conroe HVAC contractors.
