San Francisco Contractors To Get Room To Work

In some encouraging news, it sounds like San Francisco contractors are on the path to getting treated more justly by the city’s Safe Paths of Travel (SPOT) program, which enforces pedestrian and traffic safety around building sites. For a long time now, I have been hearing complaints from my friends in the downtown area of SF that construction is being hindered by overzealous cops, issuing astronomical tickets for typical construction site inconveniences like double parking.

Management of the SPOT program is in the process of being transferred to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency and that agency will take charge of explaining how the program will be made better. Improvements will include program oversight. SPOT is already funded by the SFMTA, but it’s enforced by San Francisco police officers – often using overtime.

The oversight of the SPOT program is soon going to be handled by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency will plans to make it their top priority to improve the program.  Presently SPOT is overseen by the San Francisco police, which Bay Area contractors see as a clear conflict of interests, as the officers are often receiving overtime pay for their SPOT participation.

High-Speed Rail Could Stimulate California Construction

June 13, 2009 – It appears that the construction of a massive, high-speed passenger rail system may be in California’s near future. On a national level, the Obama Administration has pledged approximately $13 billion of stimulus and other funding in order to bolster the country’s struggling rail roads.

California stands as one of the most likely candidates to receive a large portion of the funds, given that the state already has a well developed, $30 billion plan for constructing a high-speed rail system connecting Los Angeles and San Francisco.  California’s congested freeways and it’s enormous population accentuate the case for the national funding.

An infrastructure project of this magnitude could do wonders for California’s struggling economy and specifically, California’s construction industry.  Everyone from Los Angeles contractors to San Francisco contractors could see many years of stable employment for tens of thousands of workers if the high-speed passenger rail construction moves forward as planned.

San Francisco Contractors Heading Invanpah Project

September 15, 2009 – The San Francisco-based contracting firm Bechtel Group Incorporated has been named as lead engineer as well as primary construction and procurement services provider for the enormous Ivanpah solar power plant in Ivanpah Dry Lake, in San Bernardino County. The San Francisco contractor is participating as a large equity investor in the 5.3 square mile facility.

The construction of the plant, expected to last through 2013, will include three individual solar power plants which will incorporate vast arrays of mirrors to redirect the sun’s energy and covert the solar power to thermal power.  The Ivanpah facility construction will provide hundreds of jobs to Barstow contractors and 29 Palms contractors, as access roads will be required and reconductored transmission lines.

Request to Stop San Francisco Construction of Rail Denied

October 14, 2009 – The city of Atherton’s request to stop planning-progress on the Merced to San Francisco portion of the high-speed rail was denied by a Sacramento Superior Court judge. This is great news to proponents of the $45 billion California rail project, as it is important to keep the planning on track in order to capitalize on federal stimulus dollars.  The construction is expected to generate tens of thousands of jobs for California contractors, which is especially welcome news to struggling Bakersfield contractors.

A week ago, Governor Schwarzenegger applied for $4.7 billion in federal stimulus funds to assist in the high-speed rail’s construction.  In order to qualify for these funds, building will have to commence on the rail before September 2012.  For Merced contractors and other regional construction companies, the rail project cannot begin soon enough.

The upcoming renovations are welcome news to Burlingame contractors and San Bruno contractors.

The Airport Commission plans on using funds to make SFO more earthquake resistant and they also have expansion plans for Terminal 2.  It is expected that local construction businesses, including San Mateo contractors, will be fiercely competing for contracting positions on the airport’s projects.
