Infrastructure Stimulus Jumpstarts California Construction

June 1, 2009 – As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act infrastructure project, California has already laid claim to almost $1 billion of funding by identifying over 80 infrastructure improvement construction projects.  This is a good thing.  States which do not claim their funding from the Federal Highway Administration by June 30 will be dumping the money back into a pool which proactive states, like California, will then have access to for even more construction spending.

The first stimulus project is already underway.  Top Grade Construction of Livermore and Caltrans began the $13.5-million pavement improvement project for Interstate 80 on April 30.  It is estimated that this project alone will create 40,000 man-hours of labor and employ Fairfield construction professionals across 20 subcontracting trades.

On May 4th, Caltrans released a listing of 80 up-coming projects which are part of the infrastructure stimulus.  All interested contractors should contact Caltrans as soon as possible to ensure that this golden opportunity is not missed.

ARRA Could Benefit Wise California Contractors

July 1, 2009 – The California recipients of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) where announced by Governor Schwarzenegger yesterday. A total of $10 million dollars was handed-out to educational programs throughout the state in hopes of training the workers of tomorrow on clean technologies and green construction applications.  This investment in the green economy is expected to promote a cleaner environment and economic growth for the state of California.

Many contractors will be taking advantage of these educational programs, poising themselves as candidates for the wave of state-incentivized green construction projects expected to take place in the next 2 to 3 years.  Santa Clara contractors ought to be aware that Evergreen Community College received $937,873 for its program.  San Mateo contractors should take advantage of the $936,429 their county received for green education.  Also, among several other recipients, Merced contractors should take note of the $937,890 their county’s system received.

Contractors participating in the green education programs will have the opportunity to work alongside Habitat for Humanity, constructing energy-efficient homes for lower income families.

Upcoming Energy Efficiency Projects for Stockton Contractors

July 7, 2009 – A total of $4.6 million in federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) money is going to go to projects that promote conservation and energy efficiency in Lodi, Manteca, Stockton, and Tracy. To date, the state of California has received $351.5 million in federal dollars to be used on such projects.  The ARRA funds should help out everyone from Tracy general contractors to Stockton electricians who can get involved in the upcoming projects.

In Manteca, the money will likely be used for replacing city street lights with energy efficient alternatives.  In Stockton, funds will probably go to upgrading old air conditioning systems in city buildings, like the Central Library and the Police Department.

Lodi general contractors and other contractors in the region should contact their city officials about upcoming contracts associated with the ARRA spending.

Santa Maria Contractors to See a New Fire Station

October 8, 2009 – Both the cities of Morro Bay and Santa Maria have recently been notified that they will be the recipients of large grants to aid in the construction of new fire stations. Through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), Morro Bay will be receiving $1.5 million and Santa Maria’s fire department will see $2 million.  Santa Maria contractors and Morro Bay contractors are expected to competitively bid these public works projects.

The Santa Maria fire station is slated to be constructed in the northwest corner of town.  And, though $2 million dollars represents a significant portion of the funds needed to cover the Santa Maria station construction, the city will be using other funding avenues for 33-percent of the station costs.  Nipomo contractors are geographically well situated to pursue contracts for both the Santa Maria and Morro Bay fire station projects.

Porterville, CA Schools to Go Solar

November 17, 2009 – The state of California has a lofty goal of receiving 33% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020, and the Porterville Unified School District is the latest school to take a step in the green energy direction. PUSD, along with the city of Porterville and Southern California Edison, are planning a $25 million solar panel installation on its school campuses. Presently, the two candidates for the installations are Porterville Adult School and Granite Hills High School. This large public works project could mean close to 100 jobs for Porterville construction contractors.

The solar panel project is expected to cover almost 15 acres, when all is said and done, and is being financed by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act economic stimulus package. There is nearly $700 million available for the state for such school projects. Porterville contractors, including Porterville general contractors, should make a point to seize the opportunities presented by this stimulus spending.
